Access by region
Three airports of its own plus Faro on the Portuguese side, which genuinely serves western Andalusia. AVE to Seville 2h35, Málaga 2h40, Granada 3h15. Cross-links inside the region are thin — between Málaga and Granada a car is easier.
Zaragoza is 75 minutes from Madrid and 90 from Barcelona — a rare position between two markets. Huesca is on the AVE line, but the Pyrenean resorts need a car beyond it; Huesca and Lleida are the gateways for Formigal and Cerler.
The Pajares by-pass cut the run to Oviedo to roughly three and a half hours, and that changed the region: a Madrid weekend became possible for the first time. The single airport is small and seasonal in its loading.
Air and ferry only. Palma is one of Spain's largest airports, but summer capacity is at its limit and half the routes are withdrawn in winter. Planning starts from the carrier's schedule, not the hotel's.
Eight islands, eight different logistics. Inter-island Binter flights and Fred. Olsen and Armas ferries link them; a two-island itinerary needs its own costing. Year-round flow means a year-round schedule, unlike the Balearics.
Santander is four hours from Madrid on the conventional line — there is no high-speed branch. Ferries from Portsmouth and Plymouth bring a British self-drive flow found nowhere else in the north.
The best-connected region to Madrid in the country: Segovia 27 minutes, Valladolid an hour, Salamanca 1h40. This is the perfect short-break region, and it should be sold as one — two nights, not a week.
Toledo is 33 minutes from Madrid, Cuenca 55 — closer in time than the capital's own suburbs. Hence both the record 2025 growth and the format: an excursion with an overnight.
El Prat is Spain's second airport and the main gateway for the whole Mediterranean coast. Barcelona is 2h30 from Madrid by rail, which makes a two-city pairing a real product. Girona and Reus handle the low-cost flow to the coasts.
Alicante serves the Costa Blanca and Benidorm, Valencia the city and the region's north. AVE to Valencia 1h40, to Alicante 2h20. A region where rail genuinely competes with flying from Madrid.
The worst accessibility of any mainland region: Badajoz airport barely operates and there is still no high-speed line — Mérida and Cáceres are four hours from Madrid. That, not a lack of sites, explains the country's lowest RevPAR.
AVE to Ourense in 2h20 and Santiago in 3h10 — the network was completed recently and rewrote the region's accessibility. Four airports in a small area compete with each other, so schedules are unstable.
Barajas is the country's largest airport and its only genuine intercontinental hub; Latin American traffic runs almost entirely through it. The whole high-speed network is radial and converges here, which makes Madrid the natural first or last night of any itinerary.
Corvera airport opened in 2019 and remains under-used; in practice Alicante and Almería serve the region. AVE to Murcia since 2022, 2h45. Logistics explain the low occupancy as much as the product does.
No high-speed line of its own; Pamplona is three hours on the conventional train. The real gateways are Bilbao and Zaragoza. During San Fermín week logistics are saturated across the whole north, not just in Pamplona.
Bilbao is five hours from Madrid by train — the high-speed branch is still under construction, and that is the region's central logistical fact. Almost all the upper segment flies in: Bilbao airport plus Biarritz on the French side.
Effectively no airport of its own. The region is reached via Bilbao, Zaragoza or Madrid with a change, then by car — a wine route is a driving product by definition. A rental car is mandatory.
Ferry from Algeciras or helicopter from Málaga only. Logistics limit the market more than the size of the city does.
An airport with mainland flights and ferries from Málaga and Almería. The schedule is thin and cancellations are routine — a spare day in the itinerary is mandatory.
