There is no surface link between the atolls of the Maldives. Every arrival moves by boat or by air, and which of the two decides more about a programme than the property does.
Seaplanes operate in daylight only. An arrival at Velana after roughly 15:00 means a night in Hulhumale' and a connection the following morning. 9 of the 20 atolls sit under that rule, and it is built into the package rather than discovered on arrival.

The Maldives does not publish passenger volumes by airport, so the column carries the published share of tourist arrivals by point of entry instead. Only Velana has a published figure; the rest show a dash rather than a zero. A field the country does not publish is not kept for the sake of matching other countries in this series.
Transfer from Velana
| Atoll | Mode | Minutes | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kaafu | Speedboat | 10 | The only atoll on a round-the-clock speedboat transfer. Any arrival time means a same-day check-in. That removes the seaplane constraint and makes Kaafu the market for short stays, stopovers and MICE. |
| Alifu Alifu | Seaplane, daylight only | 25 | Twenty-five minutes by seaplane, the shortest leg after Kaafu. On late arrivals the atoll is lost along with the rest of the seaplane geography. |
| Alifu Dhaalu | Seaplane, daylight only | 30 | The atoll has its own international field at Maamigili — a rarity. The far end still needs a seaplane. |
| Baa | Seaplane, daylight only | 35 | Two routes: seaplane direct, or a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and a boat. The second removes the daylight constraint and sells better on late arrivals. |
| Lhaviyani | Seaplane, daylight only | 40 | Forty minutes by seaplane. The atoll is compact and inter-property hops are short, which supports split-stay programmes. |
| Faafu | Seaplane, daylight only | 40 | One resort and a forty-minute seaplane. The atoll's logistics are the logistics of a single property. |
| Dhaalu | Domestic flight plus boat | 40 | Kudahuvadhoo gives a forty-minute domestic flight, taking the atoll out of the daylight constraint and opening it to late arrivals. |
| Meemu | Seaplane, daylight only | 45 | Seaplane, daylight window. A low-volume atoll, usually combined with neighbours in one programme. |
| Noonu | Seaplane, daylight only | 45 | Maafaru takes private jets directly — the country's only alternative to connecting through Male' at the top end. Everyone else flies seaplane, meaning the daylight window applies. |
| Raa | Seaplane, daylight only | 45 | Ifuru offers a domestic flight, though most properties still arrive by seaplane. The atoll with the widest gap between stock and demand — logistics is part of the explanation. |
| Thaa | Domestic flight plus boat | 50 | Thimarafushi, domestic flight. One property on the atoll, and the transfer is built around it. |
| Shaviyani | Seaplane, daylight only | 55 | A long seaplane leg. Seclusion here is the product rather than a cost, but a late arrival means a night in Hulhumale'. |
| Laamu | Domestic flight plus boat | 55 | Kadhdhoo, a fifty-five-minute domestic flight. Laamu is the only atoll where the surf season coincides with the country's low season. |
| Haa Alifu | Domestic flight plus boat | 60 | Hanimaadhoo is an international airport under expansion. For now it is an hour's domestic flight plus a boat, and logistics is exactly what holds the atoll at 0.8%. |
| Haa Dhaalu | Domestic flight plus boat | 60 | A domestic flight to Hanimaadhoo and a crossing by sea. Kulhudhuffushi is a regional centre rather than a resort gateway. |
| Gaafu Alifu | Domestic flight plus boat | 60 | Kooddoo is the atoll's own airport with direct services. That makes the far south sellable without an overnight in Male'. |
| Gaafu Dhaalu | Domestic flight plus boat | 70 | Kaadedhdhoo and Maavarulu. Seventy minutes by domestic flight, then a boat — the longest chain against the smallest stock. |
| Gnaviyani | Domestic flight plus boat | 80 | Fuvahmulah takes domestic flights directly onto the island. No resorts: the traffic goes to guesthouses and dive centres. |
| Vaavu | Speedboat | 90 | Ninety minutes by boat — the only atoll outside Kaafu reachable by sea without switching to air. For dive groups that settles the schedule question. |
| Seenu | Domestic flight plus boat | 90 | Gan is the country's second international airport and the only alternative entry point to Male'. The causeway-linked islands give road transport, which exists nowhere else. |
Typical routing and journey time, not a timetable. Times exclude the boat leg at the far end of a domestic flight.
